Matt McHale is currently serving his second term as Mayor of the Borough of Dumont. He took office in November of 2005 after first being elected to the Borough Council in the fall of 2004, and was elected to a second, full four-year temr in the fall of 2007
During his first few months of office, McHale placed ethics and government reform as one of his top priorities. When it became apparent that the Borough of Dumont was facing a fiscal crisis, McHale successfully lobbied the State of New Jersey to intervene and provide property tax relief to the Borough’s residents. Believing that it is crucial that local government be held accountable and responsive to its constituents, he has worked with his fellow colleagues on the Council to find ways to open up Dumont Borough Hall and reform its practices and procedures.
Besides McHale’s commitments within his home town, he has been active in both State and County government affairs. In the past several years, he has successfully served as Deputy Chief of Staff and then Chief of Staff to County Executive Dennis McNerney, the first Democratic County Executive in Bergen County’s history, as special assistant to the Honorable Richard Cody, New Jersey Senate President and Acting Governor, and as the Executive Director of the Bergen County Democratic Organization. He is currently the chairperson of the Bergen County Open Space Trust Fund Advisory Committee which advises the Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders regarding the preservation and acquisition of open space within Bergen County.
